About the University of Liverpool

Founded in 1881, the University of Liverpool was one of the first civic (city) universities in the UK. Today the University is an international provider and offers over 300 degrees at undergraduate level, over 100 degrees at Master’s level and opportunities for research in 54 broad subject areas.

The University is ranked 121 in the world (according to the QS World University rankings 2010) and is a member of the elite Russell Group of leading research-intensive UK universities.

A vibrant student community

Around 15,000 full-time students are registered at the University, approximately 2,500 of which are from outside the UK.

An international reputation

The University is ranked 121 in the world (QS World University Rankings 2010). With the largest student union in the UK, international students are able to make the most of their UK university experience with this international provider.

The University rose to 29th place in The Sunday Times 2011, which is unsurprising given that no less than nine noble prize winners have been students at the University. Allan Dowie whose research assisted in ridding the modern world of small pox, Professor William Blair-Bell’s work in chemotherapy as a form of cancer treatment, and Professor Rodney Porter’s discovery of the chemical properties of antibodies name just a few of the University’s globally distinguished researchers.

In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (published in December 2008), 53% of the University’s research staff were ranked as world-leading or internationally excellent, further boosting their profile as an international provider.

Science and Engineering

In The Times Good University Guide 2012 Subject Rankings, the University of Liverpool excelled in Science and Engineering courses. It was ranked 17th for Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering, 17th for Chemistry and 9th for Mechanical Engineering.
