Major funding boost – The University of Sheffield Engineering Faculty

The University of Sheffield has announced it will invest £21 million in its Faculty of Engineering in order to maintain its position of excellence in the field. A new cutting edge graduate school is set to be completed by August 2013 and the university has plans to add a further 21 academics to the present total of 200.

Engineering is one of The University of Sheffield’s core strengths, and a major draw for international students. Recruitment of postgraduate and overseas undergraduates has seen recent growth of 40%, while the university was ranked second in the UK for mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering by the Time Higher Education Supplement in 2008.

“This is something we should be more vocal about,” says Professor Mike Hounslow, pro vice-chancellor for The University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Engineering. “You wouldn’t have so many overseas students coming to study engineering in this country if it weren’t for the fact that we provide excellent education.”

Roughly 30% of UK engineering graduates come from overseas, attracted by superior job prospects and opportunities to develop industry contacts. The University of Sheffield Faculty is highly regarded for its industry links and runs an Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre that fosters research collaboration between students and leading companies.

Sheffield International College (SIC) offers international students Foundation Certificates and Graduate Diplomas in Science and Engineering, with successful completion ensuring progression to an undergraduate or postgraduate programme at The University of Sheffield. These ‘pathway’ courses run for 2 or 3 terms and are supplemented by advanced study skills and English language support, ensuring a smooth transition to university life.
