The Al Rowdah Academy in the UAE
The Al Rowdah Academy is an exciting partnership between the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) and Kaplan International Colleges (Kaplan).
The Al Rowdah Academy is a partnership between the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) and Kaplan International Colleges (KIC). It is based in the United Arab Emirates and provides courses for students of the Abu Dhabi Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ACTVET). Within ACTVET, IAT focuses upon technical education, while the Abu Dhabi Vocational Education and Training Institute (ADVETI) offers vocational education.
ACTVET has an excellent reputation for technical and vocational education, while KIC has substantial international experience and success in preparing students for entry to prestigious universities. ACTVET Institutions offer Diplomas and Degrees in a wide range of fields including Health Science, Aviation, Logistics, Nuclear Sciences and Vocational Training. The Al Rowdah Academy offers courses that develop English language, study skills, and subject knowledge to the levels required for entry to ACTVET Diplomas and Degrees.
KIC has responsibility for the design of all Al Rowdah courses and assessments. KIC has also devolved responsibility for Al Rowdah Academy academic standards and quality; plays a key role in monitoring Al Rowdah Academy course delivery by undertaking surveys of stakeholder groups, including staff and students; and designs and delivers staff development sessions for Al Rowdah Academy teachers.
Who is the Al Rowdah Academy for?
The Al Rowdah Academy is for students who wish to study at an ACTVET Institution but who do not yet meet the requirements for direct entry.
Students apply to the appropriate ACTVET Institution for entry to their chosen Diploma or Degree - students do not apply to the Al Rowdah Academy itself. A student who does not meet the requirements for direct entry may be referred by the ACTVET Institution to the Al Rowdah Academy. The student is tested by the Al Rowdah Academy and the results are used to place the student at the appropriate level to develop their English Language ability, improve their study skills and enhance their subject knowledge. Upon successful completion, at the required level, of their preparation course at the Al Rowdah Academy, the student is guaranteed progression to their chosen ACTVET Diploma or Degree.
Courses of the Al Rowdah Academy:
The Al Rowdah Academy offers two courses – Bedaya and Edad. Both are designed by KIC and aim to develop language and study skills. In addition, Edad helps students develop their subject knowledge. Both courses are structured in a series of seven week blocks. Each block comprises six weeks teaching, followed by a week during which assessments designed by KIC take place.
Bedaya is designed for students who would benefit from substantial English language development. The Bedaya course comprises three blocks, each of seven weeks duration. Students successfully completing Bedaya progress to the Edad course.
Edad is designed for students with at least an elementary (CEFR A1+) competence in English. The full Edad course comprises six Levels, taught over six blocks, each of seven weeks duration. Students who demonstrate a higher competence in English (CEFR A2 or above) may be allowed to enter Edad at Level 2 or higher, reducing the duration of their course. To pass Edad, students must achieve a minimum of IELTS 4.5 and at least 60% in each of their subject modules. Individual ACTVET Institutions may, however, require a student to achieve an IELTS 5.0 and/or minimum specified marks in one or more subjects for guaranteed progression to a particular Diploma or Degree. The Al Rowdah Academy works with each student to help them achieve the entry requirements of their chosen Diploma or Degree.
