The Foundation Certificate for Business, Law or Finance prepares you for an undergraduate degree at Bournemouth University. You are able to obtain an intensive and comprehensive education in one of three areas: business, law or finance. The course equips you with a range of subject-related knowledge and skills, allowing you to develop a good understanding in areas such as marketing, accounting, and finance. Once you have successfully passed the course to the required level, your admission into a related undergraduate degree at Bournemouth University is guaranteed.

The learning outcomes for each of the three options include:

Business pathway students*

1. Understand the different types of business organisations and the objectives they pursue
2. Identify, using the PESTLE and SWOT frameworks, the key features of the external business environment and assess their potential impact on organisations and how organisations respond to these changing factors
3. Demonstrate an understanding of how the principles of efficiency and value creation underpin the main activities carried out by business and drive economic activity
4. Demonstrate understanding of culture within the business enterprise
5. Explain how specific elements such as human resources, finance and innovation enable a business enterprise.

The aims of your course will vary depending on the pathway you choose to study:

Law pathway students

1. Understand the basic framework of the British political and economic system
2. Understand a broad range of socio-political and cultural issues in modern Britain from a national and global perspective
3. Discuss and have an increased awareness of some of the problems in contemporary British society
4. Understand the basic framework of the British legal system
5. Demonstrate a sound overview of the influence of the Law in Britain and some of the legal problems facing contemporary British society.

Finance pathway students

1. Understand the different types of business organisations and the objectives they pursue
2. Identify, using the PESTLE and SWOT frameworks, the key features of the external business environment and assess their potential impact on organisations and how organisations respond to these changing factors
3. Use double entry methods to enter business transactions into a set of accounts and construct Trading and Profit and Loss Accounts
4. Analyse the results of a business using ratios and variances from budget figures
5. Formulate a cash-flow forecast and use discounting methods to assess capital projects
6. Use an accounting package to prepare accounts on a personal computer.

English language requirements

  • You will need to show proof of your English language ability by taking a UKVI approved IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam.
  • Students with an IELTS of 5.0 will take the three-term course, with academic and language support integrated throughout the course.
  • Students with an IELTS of at least 5.5 can choose to do the course over two- or three-term enhancement course.

Academic and language support

The International College also offers academic and language support as part of its university preparation courses for students who need support improving their English language skills.

The Foundation Certificate for Business, Law or Finance consists of seven credit-bearing modules. All modules are specifically designed to meet the needs of international students looking to study in the UK.

You will cover key academic skills (that includes research, writing, presentation and analysis), and subject-specific modules that include core subjects in your area of study, and specialised modules that are central to your chosen undergraduate degree course at Bournemouth University.
