Academic skills modules

The International Year One in Engineering develops the crucial competencies needed to enter the  second year of a Bachelor’s degree, including academic skills, subject-specific knowledge and English language ability. On successful completion at the required level, you are guaranteed progression to year two of a UWE Bachelor’s degree.

On your course you will develop key academic skills including research, writing, presentation and analysis.

The core academic skills modules in this course include*:

  • Language for Study 3
  • Skills for Study 2
*The core modules listed above apply to two-term students. Those who are studying Language or Enhancement may study additional modules.

 

Subject modules

During your course you will cover core subjects of your chosen area of study. Following this, you will progress to more specialised studies that focus on the topics and skills most needed in your chosen undergraduate degree course. All modules are specifically designed to meet the needs of foundation-level international students. The International Year One in Engineering course is taught to maximise your chances of progressing to UWE Bristol.

The subject module included in all 2-term engineering awards is:

  • Mathematics for Engineering 1

The subject modules students will study on the aerospace/mechanical/motorsport engineering pathway include:

  • Design Manufacture and Materials
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Mathematics for Engineering 2
  • Thermodynamics
  • Mechanical Stress and Dynamics

The modules students on the electronic engineering pathway include:

  • Applied Electronics
  • Programming
  • Electronic and Electronic Engineering Principles 1 and 2
  • Digital Electronic Systems

The modules students on the civil engineering pathway include:

  • Design, Manufacture and Materials
  • Engineering Hydrology
  • Surveying and GIS
  • Environmental Engineering Field Study
  • Mechanical Stress and Dynamics

 

Academic and language support

The International Year One in Engineering course is integrated with academic and language support to help you achieve the required level to progress to university.

Enhanced University preparation

Students who would like 3 terms of preparation for university with a flexible start date, but already have a high level of English, can join an Enhanced University preparation course. Additional modules in these courses include:

  • Personal Development Planning
  • Modern British Society and Culture
  • Computing Skills
  • Introduction to Tech Corp

Course length
Course length varies from 2 to 4 terms (comprising 2 or 3 terms academic teaching, with the option for extra English preparation).

Academic entry requirements
Dependent on your home country – further details are available on request.

English language entry requirements
You will need to show proof of your English language ability by taking an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam.

According to new UKVI regulations, all students must meet the minimum English requirements for study in the UK. Our courses include academic and language support to help you get the English language level and academic skills required to progress to university.
